DeLay in “Auto-Demonization Mode”
Representative Barney Frank (D-Ma) said DeLay has gone into “auto-demonization mode” in recent weeks with his out-of-control behavior trying to impeach every judge that has ruled in a way that is inconvenient to Delay’s far-right constituents.
DeLay issued a statement asserting that “the time will come for the men responsible for this to answer for their behavior.” He later he said he wants to “look at an arrogant, out-of-control, unaccountable judiciary that thumbed their nose at Congress and the president.”
One of his buddies, Senator John Cornyn (R-Tex), said this week that violence against judges might be linked to a perception that they make “political decisions.” This amounts to nothing more than a veiled threat alluding to the tragedy Judge Joan Lefkow just endured.
Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) is charging that the Republican might have broken a federal statute against threatening U.S. judges. “Threats against specific federal judges are not only a serious crime, but also beneath a Member of Congress,” Lautenberg wrote. “Your attempt to intimidate judges in America not only threatens our courts, but our fundamental democracy as well.”
Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) said, “I urge President Bush and Senator Frist to call a halt to the reckless Republican rhetoric that is endangering judges’ lives.” Kennedy also said, “Apparently, it’s not enough for Republicans to rule the White House and the Congress. They want power over the independent judiciary, too. The checks and balances so vital to our democracy are for them merely an inconvenience.”
DeLay is either a wacko extremist or brilliantly trying to divert attention from his own evil-doings. Either way, be afraid.
